Aldi is adding a new budget-friendly coffee machine to its Special Buys lineup, drawing comparisons to a pricier model sold at John Lewis. The Ambiano Capsule Coffee Machine, priced at £34.99, will be available from Thursday, October 1.
Compact Design and Features
The machine is compatible with Nespresso capsules and features a fast heat-up function. It holds 650ml of water and measures 31cm x 8cm x 21cm. According to the product description: "From bold espressos to smooth long coffees, enjoy café-style drinks from the comfort of home. Compact, stylish, and effortlessly easy to use." Aldi also offers a three-year warranty.
The £35 appliance bears a resemblance to the Nespresso Vertuo Up Pod Coffee Machine, which currently retails at John Lewis for £179. Both units feature a slimline design suitable for cramped worktops and straightforward, single-button functionality.
Similarities and Differences
John Lewis's website describes its offering: "Designed to uplift your day with effortless precision, the Vertuo Up coffee machine redefines your coffee ritual - bringing simplicity without compromising on taste, morning or anytime. With a rapid three-second heat-up time, it ensures a seamless experience - enhanced by a slim design, a large (1.4L) rotative water tank for easy refilling and space optimisation, and a smooth-opening lever."
Both coffee makers focus on speed, ease of use, and space-saving design. They feature one-touch functionality and are ready to go in approximately 30 seconds. Both models have an ultra-compact build, a removable, see-through water reservoir at the rear, and a detachable drip tray that accommodates taller mugs. They also include an automatic energy-saving feature that powers down after several minutes of inactivity.
Brewing Technology and Capsule Compatibility
Despite their similarities, notable distinctions exist beyond the price tag. The Aldi Ambiano model uses the Nespresso Original format, which takes classic, smaller dome-shaped capsules. Buyers can use genuine Nespresso pods or cheaper supermarket own-brand alternatives.
The Nespresso Vertuo system uses larger, flat, dome-shaped pods with barcode-reading technology. The machine scans this code to automatically adjust its brewing settings. Because the Vertuo system is protected by patents, buyers must purchase official Nespresso Vertuo capsules.
The two machines also employ different brewing techniques. The Ambiano uses a conventional high-pressure pump system that forces hot water through the coffee grounds to produce a concentrated espresso shot. The Vertuo system uses proprietary spinning technology that quickly combines water and coffee, making it adaptable for larger mug sizes with a characteristic thick layer of crema.
For shoppers watching their budget, the £35 Aldi option offers savings of roughly £144. The final choice between the two comes down to long-term expenses and coffee preferences.
