An abandoned McDonald’s restaurant on a former naval base in Adak Island, Alaska, has attracted millions of views online after footage showing its untouched interior and 1990s menu prices went viral on TikTok.
The branch, originally established to serve military personnel during World War II, remained frozen in time after the naval base was shut down in the 1990s, prompting many residents to leave and businesses to close. The clip, which has racked up more than 1.2 million likes, shows an old-style drive-thru and a non-digital menu displaying significantly lower prices than today’s.
Among the items listed, a Big Mac cost just £1.93 in 1994, compared with £4.89 now. A cheeseburger was 86p, while a box of 20 Chicken McNuggets was priced at £4.50, against the current £6.39. A large Triple Thick Milkshake could be bought for £1.14, or 97p to take away, with hot chocolate at 75p, coffee at 49p and a hot apple pie for 67p.
The menu also advertised a Happy Meal featuring Bobby’s World toys, a reference to the American animated children’s show broadcast on Fox Kids three decades ago. Some viewers noted that prices in Alaska may have been higher than elsewhere in the US, with one commenting: “This is in Alaska so some of those prices are even higher than what they would have been in the rest of the US.”
Nostalgic reactions flooded the comments, with one user saying: “I miss the $1.49 [£1.17] breakfast burritos,” while another added: “Dreaming about those prices.” A third wrote: “90s is like a bright summer where everyone is happy. it's the right mixture of technology and real life.” The restaurant also featured burger-themed stools, an outdoor play-park and branded ashtrays, reflecting the era’s style.
