After trying cornflakes from six leading UK supermarkets and testing them against Kellogg's, the results are surprising. Two supermarket own-brand cornflakes were joint winners of the taste test, with Tesco's 95p box coming out slightly on top for its affordable price.
How the Test Was Conducted
The brands tested were Kellogg's, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, and Asda. The judging criteria were flavour, crunchiness, and value for money. Each brand was rated on a scale of 1 to 5.
Kellogg's: The Benchmark
Kellogg's cornflakes were crunchy and delicious, with a distinct flavour that can't be replicated. They were the sweetest-tasting of the competitors, and surprisingly had the least calories at 378kcal per 100g. However, at £2 for a 250g box, their value for money was poor. Rating: 4/5.
Waitrose: A Decent Alternative
Waitrose's own brand cornflakes had a distinct flavour but were slightly lacking in crunchiness. At £1 for a 500g box, the value for money was spot on. Rating: 3/5.
M&S: One-Ingredient Cornflakes
Marks and Spencer's one-ingredient cornflakes looked like chips and tasted like puffcorn. They were a wild departure from traditional cornflakes, and at £2.65 for 325g, they were expensive. Rating: 1.5/5.
Morrisons: Crunchy and Bitter
Morrisons' own-brand cornflakes were the crunchiest and not sweet at all, leaning towards a darker, more bitter flavour profile. They were a good alternative to Kellogg's at £1.90 for 500g. Rating: 4/5.
Tesco: Best Value and Flavour
Tesco's own brand cornflakes were the second crunchiest and most reminiscent of Kellogg's flavour-wise. At 95p for 500g, they were the most affordable and economical of all the brands. Rating: 4/5 (with a slight added edge for the price).
Sainsbury's: Thin and Artificial
Sainsbury's cornflakes were the thinnest and least crunchy, with a slightly artificial flavour. At £1.15 for 500g, they were okay for value. Rating: 2.5/5.
Asda: Bland and Disappointing
Asda's own brand cornflakes had no flavour and a very thin texture. At £1.15 for 500g, they were just okay. Rating: 2/5.
Verdict
The joint winners were Tesco and Morrisons, with Tesco coming out slightly on top for its affordable price. Asda came in last place, with Sainsbury's second to last. The M&S cornflakes were wild, while Waitrose was middle of the pack. According to the tester, swapping Kellogg's for Tesco or Morrisons would save money with little difference in taste.
