Washing Machine Loud Noises: Common Causes and Fixes

If your washing machine sounds like it is throwing a tantrum during every cycle, you are far from alone. There are several potential causes, and it does not necessarily mean your appliance is on its last legs. Before you start worrying and setting aside cash for a replacement, Which? suggests investigating a few things first.

Common Causes of Washing Machine Noise

Which? explains that if your washing machine won't stop shaking or begins shuffling across the floor mid-cycle, it probably needs levelling. Every washing machine should rest evenly on a flat surface; if it does not, it can judder considerably, particularly during spin cycles.

It says: "Check if the machine is aligned using a spirit level. And if need be, adjust the feet underneath accordingly. If the feet are level, then it might be the surface causing the issue. Uneven flooring can create a shaky machine, so try sitting it on a sturdy piece of wood or old desktop and manoeuvre the corners to even it out."

Unbalanced Loads and Transit Bolts

Additional reasons could include poorly balanced loads of laundry. It notes that laundering a single heavy item, such as a cotton towel, or combining it solely with lighter garments, can create difficulties. As the towel absorbs water and increases in weight, it may be flung against the drum during the spin cycle, causing the machine to vibrate and make noise. To avoid this, wash heavy items together and avoid overfilling the drum, as cramming too much in can cause similar imbalances.

If you have just moved or purchased a new washing machine, make sure the transit bolts have been removed. These bolts are typically located on the rear of the appliance and are used to secure the drum in position during transport. Most machines feature three or four bolts that need to be removed prior to operation. If they remain attached, they can trigger excessive shaking and may ultimately result in serious, potentially irreversible damage.

How to Level a Washing Machine

According to appliance experts at Bosch, there are a few simple steps to follow. It adds: "Washing machines that are not balanced can result in loud thumping or knocking sounds, especially when operating at high speeds. To remove these loud noises, check the feet to ensure that the washing machine is evenly balanced and resting on a flat surface. Also, check that the washing machine is parallel to the ground by using a spirit level. If it is not level, adjust the feet accordingly and tighten them in place."
