US Potato Chip Brands Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

Two popular US potato chip brands have been recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. Utz Brands issued a voluntary recall for certain varieties of Zapp's and Dirty potato chips after concerns that the seasoning used on the products may contain the bacteria.

Recall Details

The recall, announced on Monday through the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects three flavors of Zapp's chips sold in various bag sizes and three flavors of Dirty chips packaged in 2-ounce bags. In total, nine chip varieties are impacted, including salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, and other flavors as listed on the FDA's website.

Affected Products

  • Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (1.5oz, 2.5oz, 8oz)
  • Zapp's Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (1.5oz)
  • Zapp's Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip (2.5oz, 8oz)
  • Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (2oz)
  • Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip (2oz)
  • Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips (2oz)

Although the seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella before use, consumers are advised not to eat these products and to discard them immediately. The concern stems from a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies Inc, supplied through a third-party vendor. Utz initiated the recall nationwide as a precautionary measure.

Wider Impact

No other Utz products are included in this recall. However, the California Dairies milk powder recall has affected other companies, including Ghirardelli, which recalled certain powdered drink mixes, and John B Sanfilippo & Son, which recalled some snack mix items due to the potentially contaminated milk powder.

Health Risks

Salmonella is a group of bacteria responsible for food-borne illnesses, accounting for about one in four diarrheal diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms include sudden fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and occasionally vomiting. While most infections are mild, they can become severe or life-threatening, especially for children and older adults.
