Nationwide Building Society has issued an update about its branch security measures after a notice was spotted at one of its branches. The group confirmed it can bring in enhanced measures if this is deemed necessary.
Security Notice at Redhill Branch
A sign entitled 'Security notice' was spotted in the window of the Nationwide branch in Redhill in Surrey. The sign read: "We're here to help, but we won't tolerate aggressive or violent behaviour. We have security equipment in this branch to keep us all safe and may use CCTV to help us make improvements in the future." The message also advised visitors: "We don't have immediate access to our safe."
Company Response and Security Measures
Nationwide was asked what security measures it usually has in place at its branches and how it uses CCTV footage from its branches to improve its services. A Nationwide spokesperson said: "Keeping our customers and colleagues safe is our top priority. We regularly review the security arrangements across our branch network to help ensure a safe and secure environment. This includes the use of CCTV, where appropriate, for security, safety and incident management purposes. While all branches have a consistent level of security in place, we may choose to enhance measures in specific locations as necessary."
The notice at the Surrey branch also includes a list of the security features and policies it has in place. These include: security alarms, no crash helmets, time-delay locks, security fog, 24hr security cameras, and a statement that abuse or aggression is not acceptable.
Branch Network and Commitment
Nationwide has a network of 605 branches across the UK as well as 91 Virgin Money branches, after the building society completed its acquisition of the bank in 2023. Nationwide has committed to keeping open all of these branches until at least 2030, in its Branch Promise. The chain will only close a branch due to circumstances beyond its control or if it is relocating in the same town.
