Lidl has submitted a new planning application for a major development in the English town of Wantage, Oxfordshire. The German retailer, which has more than 1,000 stores in the UK, is seeking to adjust conditions on a previously approved application for a site on Grove Road.
The application includes a sustainable drainage scheme, parking and turning spaces, landscaping, and provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging. There is already a Lidl store on the site, and the new planning application seeks to allow adjustments to that store.
Application Details
The application is listed under reference P26/V1891/S73 and is categorised as a major development. It was made to the Vale of White Horse District Council in May, with a consultation open until August 5. According to the council's listing, no appeals have been received.
Recent Store Opening
The application comes just months after the store opened in December 2025. Planning permission was initially secured for the new store in 2022, but a new version was also accepted in the summer of 2024.
Kate Bleloch, the regional head of property at Lidl GB, said ahead of the store's opening: "We're thrilled to be joining the community in Wantage and Grove and are excited to welcome the first shoppers through our doors. We've been creating Lidl fans across Oxfordshire and are excited to now bring our much-loved products to shoppers here."
Other Lidl Plans
The Wantage application is one of several planning applications submitted by Lidl in the UK in recent months. The supermarket wants to build on an undeveloped site in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, two years after its scheme in Links Road was ditched. Meanwhile, Lidl had also recently been given the green light on contested plans for a new Oxfordshire town store, where 6,300 new homes will be built. Those plans had faced 34 resident objections, which stated there were already enough supermarkets in Didcot.
