IKEA Recalls Garlic Press Over Risk of Metal Fragments
IKEA Recalls Garlic Press Over Metal Fragments Risk

IKEA Australia has issued an urgent recall for a popular kitchen gadget following the identification of a defect that could lead to serious injury. The IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL Garlic Press in Black, priced at $4, has been removed from shelves due to a risk of small metal pieces detaching from the utensil during use.

This poses a significant risk if the metal fragments become mixed with food and are subsequently ingested, potentially causing harm to consumers. IKEA Australia made an urgent announcement on its Instagram account on Friday, reminding customers about the ongoing product recall, which was first announced globally in mid-2025.

“Due to a production error, identified after an internal investigation, indicating a risk of small metal pieces detaching during use and subsequently being ingested with the food leading to customer injury, we are recalling the IKEA 365+ VÄRDEFULL Garlic Press,” the company stated.

Affected Batches and Identification

The recall specifically affects a certain batch of the garlic press—those with a date stamp ranging from 2411 (YYWW) to 2522 (YYWW). Affected products can be identified by the IKEA logo marking on the upper handle of the product, as detailed in the latest social media notice.

An initial product recall notice for this budget-friendly cooking utensil was listed last year on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Product Safety website. The notice, published on June 18, 2025, explained that the recalled garlic press is an “aluminium chrome plated utensil with a black plastic handle.”

ACCC Warning Details

The ACCC’s online recall listing stated that the issue with the garlic press is that “small metal pieces can detach from the press during use,” posing a hazard because “detached metal pieces can be swallowed with food and cause injuries.” The ACCC Product Safety website also provided a diagram showing precisely where to locate the IKEA date stamp markings on the garlic press.

IKEA Australia shared a similar product recall notice on its website in mid-2025, urging customers to stop using the faulty garlic press and contact their local store. That June 2025 notice confirmed that “the affected product has the article number 601.636.02.”

Consumer Guidance

The company has outlined clear steps for affected consumers:

  • Check the date stamp: Locate the date stamp on your garlic press. If it falls between 2411 and 2522, it is affected.
  • If in doubt, contact IKEA: Customers unsure about their product should reach out for clarification.
  • Stop using immediately: Discontinue use of affected garlic presses and contact IKEA for a full refund. No receipt or proof of purchase is required.
  • Spread the word: IKEA encourages consumers to inform others who may have received, lent, or sold the recalled product.

“Customers who own an affected garlic press should immediately stop using it and contact IKEA for a full refund,” the recall notice read. “No receipt or proof of purchase is required. Additionally, IKEA encourages customers to spread the word about this recall, especially if they know that the recalled product was offered, lent or sold to someone else.”
