Bin collection times are being changed across Greater Manchester as scorching temperatures are forecast, with some crews starting as early as 5.30am to avoid the worst of the heat. The Met Office has issued a red 'severe' heat alert for Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching 37C in the region by Thursday, June 25.
Council-by-council changes
Wigan council is the only authority in Greater Manchester that has confirmed no changes to its bin collection services. All other councils have implemented temporary adjustments to protect staff from the extreme heat.
Bolton Council
From Tuesday, June 23 to Friday, June 26, bin collections in Bolton will start at 6am instead of the usual time. Collection days and routes remain unchanged. Councillor Robert Morrisey, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "This change is a short-term measure to ensure essential services can continue while prioritising the health and wellbeing of frontline staff during very hot weather."
Bury Council
Bury Council is urging residents to put bins out by 6am on collection day, with handles facing the road. A Facebook post stated: "This temporary change allows our crews to work during the cooler parts of the day and helps reduce the risks associated with high temperatures."
Manchester Council
A spokesperson said waste and recycling collections, including large items, will start at 6am for the rest of the week. Residents due for collection on Wednesday 24, Thursday 25, or Friday June 26 should ensure bins are out before 6am.
Oldham Council
Collections may start up to one hour earlier than usual. Residents are advised to have bins out by 6am on collection day. The council thanked residents for their patience.
Rochdale Council
From June 24 to June 26, bin crews will start earlier. Bins should be out by 6am on the kerbside with handles facing the road.
Salford Council
A spokesperson said measures include starting shifts at 6am, distributing bottled water, and providing regular breaks. Any service changes will be communicated through usual channels.
Stockport Council
Collections will start at 6.30am this week. Residents are asked to put bins out the night before collection day.
Trafford Council
Collections will begin at 5.30am on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 June. Councillor Stephen Adshead said: "Waste collection crews walk on average 10 miles per day, carrying out manual handling which is physically demanding particularly in the heat. An earlier start will allow teams to carry out work during the cooler hours of the morning and help to avoid potential heat exhaustion." He acknowledged potential noise disruption but emphasised safety.
Tameside Council
Bin crews will start an hour earlier, with bins required out by 6am. A post warned that hot weather could slow rounds and cause delays, and residents should check the council website for updates.
