Blue Badge holders are being warned that misunderstanding the rules of the scheme could lead to a fine of up to £1,000 or even loss of the badge. Car expert Gabriel Hambleton from Gold Label Car Care highlighted common misconceptions that could prove costly.
According to Hambleton, many people mistakenly believe the Blue Badge allows parking anywhere, but restrictions apply. Badge holders cannot park in loading bays, taxi or permit holder spaces, across pedestrian crossings, on school 'keep clear' markings, or on double white lines. Parking is also prohibited where it could endanger others or obstruct access, such as near junctions, bus stops, or hospital entrances.
The Blue Badge must always be displayed clearly on the dashboard with relevant details visible. It is strictly for the holder's use, either as a driver or passenger. Lending the badge, using it after expiry, or failing to return a badge no longer needed can result in withdrawal and a fine of up to £1,000.
Blue Badges are valid for three years or until the end date of certain benefits. Holders must monitor expiry dates and apply for renewal up to 12 weeks in advance, as reminders are no longer sent. Returning an unwanted badge to the issuing authority prevents misuse.
