Benefits Only People Over State Pension Age Can Claim

More than 13.2 million people of State Pension age live across Great Britain, including over 1.1 million in Scotland, according to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Many rely on the State Pension as their main source of income, with 4.1 million receiving up to £965 every four weeks through the New State Pension in the 2026/27 financial year. Another 8.8 million retirees get up to £739 per pay period from the Basic State Pension.

As the official retirement age rises to 67, it is crucial for those approaching retirement—and those already receiving payments—to be aware of additional financial support. The MoneyHelper website has compiled a comprehensive list of benefits, discounts, and reductions available to older people, along with quick eligibility checks.

Pension Credit: A Gateway Benefit

Pension Credit currently supports 1.4 million people across the UK, including over 125,000 in Scotland. It provides an average of £4,300 per year and acts as a 'passport' to other benefits such as Council Tax discounts, housing cost help, NHS discounts, and free TV Licences for the over-75s. Processing takes around 50 working days, so successful claimants could see their first payment arrive before September.

Help with Council Tax and Heating Costs

Homeowners and renters may qualify for Council Tax support from their local authority. Additionally, insulation and heating improvement schemes are available for those with poorly insulated homes or no working central heating, particularly if they receive income-related benefits like Pension Credit. Contact Home Energy Scotland at 0808 808 2282 for more details.

Health and Disability Benefits

Everyone in Scotland is entitled to free prescriptions. Free dental treatment and refunds for travel to hospital appointments are also available. For those with disabilities or long-term health conditions, benefits include:

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – for those under State Pension age or who reached it while claiming PIP
  • Adult Disability Payment – replacing PIP in Scotland
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) – must have been claimed before reaching State Pension age
  • Attendance Allowance – for those over State Pension age not claiming DLA or PIP
  • Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) – replacing Attendance Allowance in Scotland

Travel and TV Concessions

People over 60 or disabled can access travel concessions via Transport Scotland. A free passport is available for British nationals born on or before September 2, 1929. For TV Licences, those over State Pension age who are registered as severely sight-impaired or blind may get a 50% discount; otherwise, a free licence is only for those receiving Pension Credit.

Benefits for War Widows and Widowers

If a spouse or civil partner died or was injured due to service in HM Armed Forces before April 6, 2005, a War Widow's or Widower's Pension may be claimed. For conflicts after that date, compensation may be available through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. Those with a War Disablement Pension can get help towards medical costs for accepted disabilities.

Age Scotland also provides a full list of benefits and support for older people on their website.
