Work begins on £7m social housing scheme in Oxton Village

Work has begun on a new £7m social housing development in Oxton Village, Wirral. The scheme, named The Parchments, will deliver 30 homes and marks the first social homes to be built in the area for over a decade.

Development details

Magenta Living, Wirral's largest housing provider, worked with Wirral Council's planning department to design the scheme in keeping with the surrounding local conservation area. The name The Parchments pays homage to the site's history as a former school, reflecting the reading and writing materials used in education at the old school.

The development will consist of 30 homes in total, including 18 two-bedroom and 12 one-bedroom apartments.

Funding and timeline

The scheme has received financial support of £3.57m from Homes England, as part of its plans to make more affordable and social housing available.

Construction is expected to be completed in January 2028. The project is part of Magenta Living's commitment to build 1,300 new homes in Wirral by 2030.

Reactions

Paul McGrady, Magenta Living's chief financial officer, said: "We are very proud to be able to move forward now with this development, respecting the unique character of Oxton Village, and giving more people a chance to join this special corner of Wirral. We are determined to provide more quality, much-needed, housing; strengthening our communities and giving the people who live here more opportunities."

Wirral Council leader Cllr Paula Basnett said: "Providing more high-quality homes is a key priority, ensuring local people can access good-quality housing in the communities where they want to live. So, it's encouraging to see Magenta Living bringing forward another housing development in this popular part of Wirral and just as importantly, the scheme has been designed with sensitivity to the conservation area, helping to meet housing needs while protecting the character of the neighbourhood."
