Wallsend £6m regeneration plans open for public consultation

Residents can now give their views on £6m worth of proposed improvements to Wallsend, including new paving, seating and roadworks. North Tyneside Council has opened a public consultation on a series of proposals linked to a wider regeneration plan for the town.

The local authority has been awarded £6m through the Department for Transport’s sustainable transport settlement programme to invest in the area. The funding can only be used for projects that improve public spaces and make it easier, safer and more attractive for people to walk, wheel or cycle.

Proposed improvements at Forum Square and High Street

The council has proposed new paving, seating, planting and better facilities for community events at Forum Square. The High Street could see new paving and improved crossing points, alongside safety works at the Elton Street East junction.

A new cycleway is also proposed between West Street and Rutland Road to allow for a “safer connection” between the Coast Road and North Road.

Funding and timeline

The funding allocation is subject to final consideration and approval by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority. Residents can make their views known to the authority through its Have Your Say website.

The consultation will run until Sunday, November 8 2026. It is expected that the works will begin in the summer of 2027.

How to take part

The consultation states: “The consultation is an opportunity for residents, businesses and others to provide feedback on the proposals. All comments and suggestions received will be carefully reviewed and considered during the development of the final designs. It may not however be possible to incorporate all the suggestions made.

“Any changes made as a result of the feedback will be reported through the ‘You Said, We Did’ hub.”
