Households across the UK are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed as millions of winged ants prepare to take to the skies for their annual mating frenzy. Flying Ant Day, a natural phenomenon, sees swarms of ants emerge from nests in vast numbers, and experts are warning that this year could be particularly prolific.
The advice comes as forecasters predict that this year's peak activity will occur earlier than usual, with Best Ants UK estimating around 22 and 25 July. During the swarming period, experts suggest that residents should keep doors, windows and even mouths shut to avoid the influx.
According to guidance reported by The Guardian, the flying ants are not merely a nuisance but play an important ecological role. They serve as a vital food source for birds, while their tunnelling activity helps to improve soil quality. The swarming behaviour itself is a reproductive strategy, overwhelming predators and increasing the chances of survival.
Paul Blackhurst, Technical Academy Head at Rentokil Pest Control, warned that larger-than-usual swarms could be seen this year. He explained that recent alternating wet and warm weather has created ideal conditions, as humidity keeps the ants' wings and bodies moist during flight and mating. He said: 'Ideal weather conditions can trigger the appearance of tens of millions of them taking to the skies in massive swarms over several weeks across Britain.'
For those wishing to keep their homes ant-free, experts recommend installing fly screens to allow fresh air in while keeping pests out. Additionally, wiping surfaces with a potent detergent can remove pheromone trails left by scout ants, preventing others from following the scent into the home.
