For a slow-draining or smelly sink, soda crystals are the most effective solution, not harsh chemical cleaners, baking soda, or vinegar, according to experts at Bright & Beautiful.
Drains clog because food scraps, soap residue, oils, and grease build up in pipes over time. The fizzy reaction between white vinegar and baking soda is not powerful enough to shift greasy build-ups, as vinegar is acidic and baking soda is only mildly alkaline, leaving fizzy salt water instead of a clear drain.
Why soda crystals work
Soda crystals are highly alkaline, so they break down acidic grease and fat, dissolving them in water. They also tackle organic blockages, making them ideal for bathroom sinks clogged with hair or soap scum.
How to use soda crystals
Boil the kettle and pour the hot water down the drain. Once it has drained completely, fill a mug with soda crystals and tip them down the plughole. Let them work for five to 10 minutes to break down the obstruction.
Boil the kettle a second time and pour the hot water down the drain to wash away the soda crystals and dissolved grime. The expert advised: "To be extra sure your blockage has completely gone, empty a full kettle of hot water down the sink."
