British Couple Trade UK Life for Bali, Rent Three-Bed House for £2,000 a Year

A British couple from Denton, Manchester, have relocated to Bali, selling their three-bedroom property for £365,000 and renting a similar home for just £2,000 annually. Matt Dearing, 36, and Carlie Donnelley, 35, made the move in November 2022 with their three children, seeking an escape from the daily grind and a better work-life balance.

The couple, who now live in Ubud, purchased a 1,200-square-foot plot of land for £100,000 and plan to build their dream home, saving an estimated £236,000 compared to UK construction costs. Matt, a joiner by trade, said the return on investment is 'amazing' and that they have 'struck gold'. The family spent three months exploring Bali before settling in Ubud.

Matt explained that in the UK, he was only spending about an hour with his children before bedtime, constantly chasing bills. Now, he can drop them off and pick them up from school. Carlie, a beautician, said the move has allowed more family time and outdoor activities, adding that she is 'loving life' in Bali's tropical climate.

Relatives initially called them 'mad' for the decision, but the couple viewed it as a chance to break free from conventional norms and give their children a broader experience. They document their journey on TikTok under the account @serenitylivingbali, hoping to inspire others.
