A two-bedroom apartment inside a 162-year-old Gothic church in Toxteth has been listed for sale with offers over £190,000. The property occupies the ground floor of the former St. John's Wesleyan Methodist Church, built in 1862, and retains many of its original ecclesiastical features.
History of the Church Building
The church stands on the corner of Belvidere Road and Devonshire Road. It originally featured two towering spires on either side of the main building, though only the bottom parts of the spires remain today, resembling two tapered cylinders.
The building was enlarged in 1876. In 1882 it declared its independence and became a Welsh Methodist Chapel, then rejoined the Wesley Circuit in 1914 before closing three years later. In 1950 it became a Baptist place of worship known as the Belvidere Road Independent Baptist Church, now located within Belvidere Academy.
The Apartment and Its Features
The building was sold to ECAM Properties in 2016 and converted into flats. The ground floor apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open-plan kitchen and lounge. Large church windows flood the combined living areas with natural light.
Unusually for a modestly-sized apartment, it spans two floors. The upper level contains the two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a standing shower and the other with a bath. The main bedroom retains attractive episcopal windows. The yellow sandstone church sits directly opposite Princes Park.
The property is listed for sale with Entwistle Green for offers over £190,000.
