TV Hosts' Emotional Rush to Complete Renovation for Ill Father

Channel 4 property show hosts Scarlette and Stuart Douglas, known for their work on Worst House on the Street and Can't Sell, Must Sell, have overseen hundreds of renovations over the years. However, one project stands out for deeply emotional reasons that tugged at their heartstrings.

A Heartbreaking Discovery During Filming

While filming an episode of Worst House on the Street, the brother-and-sister duo met newlyweds Ben and Millie, who were desperate to transform their dilapidated property into a dream family home. Upon meeting the couple's relatives, Stuart and Scarlette learned that Ben's father was seriously ill, adding a poignant layer to the renovation.

"We were trying to make sure, or help them get the renovation finished so that Ben's dad would be able to see it," Stuart exclusively revealed. The hosts and crew rallied to expedite the work, driven by the hope that the father would witness the completed home.

A Special Moment Captured on Camera

Fortunately, their efforts paid off. Ben's father was able to be present when the renovation was finished, creating a memorable moment for everyone involved. "When that renovation was finished and Ben's dad was able to be there and experience it, that was really, really special," said Stuart, aged 47.

Scarlette added that the renovation took about a year and a half, with the show airing another year and a half later. They hoped not only for the father to see the end product but also to watch the episode. "And he did make it. That, not just for Ben and Millie and for their dad, but for us, the crew, for everybody involved in that show, we were just willing for it to be right and be done for this guy to see it and he did. That was a really beautiful moment," she shared.

Beyond Any Ordinary Transformation

Stuart admitted that this experience surpassed any typical renovation. "That surpasses any renovation or any transformation. For me, that was probably the most heartfelt, emotional episode because of the reasons that surrounded it," he stated. Scarlette agreed, noting that the couple also had a baby during the process, adding to the emotional depth of the story.

New Initiative: Keys or Coffee

In December 2025, the siblings launched a new social media initiative called Keys or Coffee, aiming to make home ownership "accessible, meaningful and exciting." This project allows the public to vote on design choices for a property in Bournemouth, with the winner getting the home for just £3, the average cost of a coffee.

Stuart explained, "We've always wanted to get the public involved... We're going to let the public decide what goes in it. Should we let someone in the public win it? And then we thought, 'Why not?'" Scarlette described it as "the house social media built," emphasizing that each home will be unique due to public input.

How to Participate and Win

On Instagram, users can choose between three design options for various parts of the property, from doors to bathrooms. The most voted options will be installed. Entry to win the property costs £3, with bundle options at £20 and £90 offering additional prizes like a trip to Rio or £5,000. The winner will be announced on 19 April at the Ideal Home Show.

Worst House on the Street is available to stream on Channel 4, showcasing more of Stuart and Scarlette's transformative work in the property world.
