Deep in the Texas countryside, a five-acre gated community called The Bird's Nest is home to 12 women who live by two simple rules: no men, and no drama. Founded by 70-year-old retired radiology technologist Robyn Yerian, the commune offers an idyllic lifestyle with fire pits, yoga sessions, book clubs, and a private pool.
Robyn bought the land in 2022 for $35,000 (£25,926) after realising her retirement savings were insufficient. She spent an additional $100,000 (£74,075) from her life savings to make it liveable. Initially open to anyone over 55, she pivoted to a women-only model after hosting a power tool workshop for women, where the idea was enthusiastically received.
The residents, mostly aged 60 to 80, live in quirky tiny homes. Robyn charges $450 (£334.50) per plot, covering water, septic tank, rubbish, and lawn maintenance. She emphasises affordability and communal decision-making, saying, 'We all run this place together.'
Robyn enforces a strict no-drama policy, stating, 'I won’t put up with drama, pettiness, talking behind people’s backs – we don’t do that here.' Prospective members undergo a vetting process, including a phone interview and a visit to the commune. The community fosters mental wellness, with activities like yoga, games nights, and group meals, and residents support each other with errands and appointments.
