The former Sands pub in Ainsdale, which closed in late 2017, is set to be redeveloped under an agreement between Sefton Council and GSL Developments Limited. The deal marks a major step towards bringing the long-vacant site back into use.
Part of wider regeneration
The redevelopment will form part of Sefton Council’s wider Ainsdale on Sea Eco-Vision regeneration project. The aim is to improve one of the main gateway locations to the Sefton Coast.
Sefton Council has approved a phased lease arrangement for the site. This ensures redevelopment milestones are met before a long-term lease is granted.
Framework for investment
The agreed Heads of Terms establish the framework for redeveloping the prominent coastal site. They are intended to unlock investment and support future regeneration in the area.
Councillor Paulette Lappin said the redevelopment demonstrates the council’s commitment to attracting investment. She added it will benefit residents, visitors and local businesses while supporting sustainable growth.
Transforming the site
The plans will transform a site that has stood empty and deteriorating since 2017. The project is also expected to improve the visitor experience along the Sefton Coast.
GSL Developments Limited plans to create a high-quality hospitality destination that fits the council’s vision for the Ainsdale Gateway. The company will now progress designs, secure planning permission and begin work as soon as possible.
Developers said they are committed to investing in the building’s future and helping revitalise Ainsdale. The scheme is expected to give the historic landmark a new purpose after years of vacancy.
