Sainsbury's Strawberry Taste Test: Cheapest Wins with 9/10 Score
Sainsbury's Strawberry Test: Cheapest Wins with 9/10

Sophie Harris, Senior Lifestyle Reporter, conducted a taste test of three Sainsbury's strawberry ranges — organic, Taste the Difference, and standard — to determine which offered the best flavour and value. All punnets were 250g, but prices varied significantly. The standard strawberries, priced at £2.10, outperformed the others with a score of 9/10, while both organic and Taste the Difference scored 4/10.

Organic Strawberries: Flavourless and Deteriorating

The Sainsbury's SO Organic strawberries cost £3.50 for 250g. Despite organic farming's reputation for healthier, more flavoursome produce due to the absence of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, Harris found the fruit entirely flavourless. Worse, some strawberries showed signs of deterioration on the shelf, and the punnet did not last a single day. She concluded they were not worth the price.

Taste the Difference: Expensive but Watery

The Taste the Difference punnet, priced at £2.95 for 250g (with a 400g punnet reduced to £3.50 with Nectar card), also disappointed. Harris described the fruit as watery and devoid of flavour, despite Sainsbury's website claiming they are "hand-selected to be perfectly ripe, sweet and juicy." The strawberries lasted longer in the fridge but failed to meet expectations given the cost.

Standard Strawberries: Sweet, Firm, and Great Value

The standard Sainsbury's strawberries, at £2.10 for 250g, were the cheapest option. Although they lacked visual appeal, Harris praised their delightfully sweet flavour and firm texture. She noted that the cheaper option triumphed over the more expensive ranges. While she wished for larger berries and longer shelf life, she said she would eagerly buy them again.
