The Rover P6 3500, a classic 1960s executive cruiser, can now be bought for under £3,000, making it a potential retirement project for older drivers across Britain.
The criteria for the recommendation was finding a model that was considered desirable in the 1960s – a true poster car that many wanted but perhaps could not afford. The MG MGB GT and Triumph Spitfire were considered, but practicality for pensioners ruled them out.
A Luxurious 1960s Icon
The P6 was designed as a luxurious executive cruiser and stood at the height of luxury in the 1960s, winning the inaugural European Car of the Year prize in 1964 ahead of the Mercedes-Benz 600. Its interior featured high-end materials, including quality leather, plush carpets, and wood trim.
The 3500 model launched in 1968 with a price tag of around £1,800 – equivalent to roughly £31,000 today, when the average annual salary was about £1,100. Prices have since dropped, with P6 3500 models available today for well under £3,000.
Why It Suits Older Drivers
The model came equipped with factory-fitted power steering, making low-speed manoeuvring easier than on many 1960s cars, which typically require heavy steering force. The P6 also offers a high cushioned seating position for easy access, and is renowned for its smooth ride quality – a useful feature on Britain's pothole-ridden roads today.
While not a daily driver, the Rover is suited to pensioners not travelling long distances and looking for enjoyment, such as meeting family for a picnic in the park.
