Jose Mourinho is reportedly planning a surprising £80 million move for Manchester City defender Ruben Dias as Real Madrid aim to strengthen their defense this summer.
Mourinho Targets Dias for Real Madrid
Real Madrid are growing increasingly confident of luring Dias to the Bernabeu. Mourinho, now in his second stint at the Spanish club, has identified the Portuguese centre-back as a top summer target. Real president Florentino Perez is ready to back Mourinho financially and is preparing an initial offer for the defender.
However, Manchester City are determined to resist any approach from the La Liga giants. Incoming City manager Enzo Maresca considers Dias integral to his plans, especially after the exit of John Stones heightened the defender's importance to the squad.
Dias' Impact at Manchester City
City brought Dias from Benfica for £60 million in 2020. Since then, he has helped the club win 11 major trophies, including the historic Treble in 2023. Despite his contract running until 2028, Pep Guardiola's departure has cast doubt on the futures of several City players. Dias may be tempted by a fresh challenge after winning everything possible in Manchester.
The centre-back is currently with Portugal's World Cup squad and focused on the tournament. Yet the prospect of a move to Real Madrid could be hard to resist. Mourinho sees Dias as a potential defensive partner for Antonio Rudiger.
Real Madrid's Broader Interest in City Stars
Real Madrid's hierarchy is also monitoring Dias' City teammate Rodri. The Ballon d'Or winner has long been coveted by Real, but even Perez acknowledges that signing both players would be nearly impossible.
City are powerless to prevent Bernardo Silva from leaving, however. The Portuguese midfielder is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after the World Cup, having ended his illustrious City career at the end of the season.
