A Brisbane real estate agent has been dismissed after making derogatory comments about rental tenants on Facebook. Aimee Marsh, 30, lost her job at Ray White Aspley on Tuesday following a backlash over remarks she posted on a community Facebook page.
In the now-deleted posts, punctuated with emojis, Marsh wrote that tenants 'probably earn $50k a year and are envious of me' and claimed she 'pay[s] twice their wage in tax or I probably pay their Centrelink wages'. She also said she 'can't wait to sell the houses they rent' and called them 'a disgrace and irrelevant'.
According to 7News, Marsh made further disparaging comments about those who do not own homes, suggesting they were unwilling to make 'sacrifices'. She wrote: 'People like people who sugar-coat crap. I’ll happily tell someone to get a job, if they want to buy a home. How else do you expect to do it?'
Marsh defended the comments, saying they were posted a year ago and taken out of context. She stated: 'It was literally a post to say congrats on sellers achieving $85k more on their auction results. I’m not sorry for what I said, I’m sorry that it offended people.' She also reported receiving 'vile threats and abuse' since the posts gained attention.
Ray White Queensland confirmed the sacking, stating Marsh's comments 'do not align with the values of our business' and offering an apology to anyone offended. The company has also offered counselling to Marsh.
