Hidden in wallets, jars, and down the back of sofas across the UK could be two of the rarest 50p coins in circulation – and they're worth a small fortune to collectors.
The £1,000+ 50p Coins You Might Have Missed
Numismatic experts have revealed that two specific 50p designs are fetching over £1,000 each in online auctions. The first is the coveted 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, of which only 210,000 were minted. The second is a particular 2011 Olympic Wrestling 50p with a unique error that makes it exceptionally rare.
Why Are These Coins So Valuable?
The Kew Gardens coin commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens and features a stunning pagoda design. Its extreme scarcity (just 0.3% of all 50ps in circulation) drives its value. Meanwhile, the Olympic Wrestling coin's value comes from a minting error that left some without the required edge lettering.
How to Spot These Treasure Coins
- Kew Gardens 50p: Look for the year 2009 and a detailed illustration of the famous pagoda surrounded by vines
- Olympic Wrestling 50p: Check 2011 coins for the wrestling design, then examine the edge – valuable ones are missing the text "IXXX Olympiad London 2012"
Coin dealer Jessica Owen told us: "We've seen perfect condition Kew Gardens coins sell for £1,200 recently. Even worn examples fetch £600+. The error Olympic coins are rarer still – only about 50 exist."
