Deep beneath the Kansas plains, a former Cold War missile silo has been transformed into the Survival Condo, a luxury bunker designed to withstand nuclear war, natural disasters, and economic collapse. The facility, once home to a nuclear warhead 100 times more powerful than the Nagasaki bomb, now offers apartments starting at $3 million.
The bunker features 15 storeys of living space, including a supermarket designed to mimic a Whole Foods to prevent depression among residents. Developer Larry Hall, a former government contractor, bought the silo for $300,000 in 2008 and spent millions converting it into a self-sufficient refuge for up to 75 people for five years.
Hall's project is one of several repurposed silos across the US. Others have become LSD factories, extraterrestrial communication hubs, and scuba diving training facilities. The Survival Condo caters to the super-rich, joining a trend of wealthy individuals like Bill Gates and Kim Kardashian investing in underground shelters.
During the 2020 civil unrest in Washington DC, President Trump was reportedly taken to a bunker beneath the White House. Trump has also claimed to have bunkers at his properties in New York and Florida, including a shelter under Mar-a-Lago built in the 1950s by cereal magnate Marjorie Merriweather Post.
