Plans to convert a three-storey town centre office building in Lanark into a 34-bedroom hotel or hostel have sparked more than 100 objections from local residents. The proposals, submitted to South Lanarkshire Council, aim to transform Atholl House on Bannatyne Street, a location near the town's bus and railway stations.
Residents Raise Safety and Parking Concerns
Objectors have described the plans as vague and expressed worries about the potential clientele. One resident stated: "Hostels involve a constant turnover of unfamiliar visitors. I don't feel comfortable with this level of transient occupancy so close to our homes. It could affect the sense of security and community that currently exists in the neighbourhood." The resident added: "I appreciate that not all hostel guests cause trouble but residents' concerns about safety and wellbeing should be given proper consideration. And residents should not have to compete for parking spaces outside their own homes because of a development that fails to provide appropriate parking facilities."
Another objector referenced "demonstrations, aggressive situations and trouble" occurring elsewhere due to similar conversions, warning that Lanark could face the same issues. He noted: "There are schools nearby and recent events have highlighted incidents particularly involving young females. This decision must be a no-brainer for the council who have a duty of care towards their constituents."
Community Council Also Objects
Lanark Community Council has formally objected, arguing that the development would "undermine the character of the area" and "impact adversely the amenity and wellbeing of the established community."
Supporters Cite Need for Tourism Accommodation
However, several people have backed the proposal. One supporter said: "Lanark is in need of hotel options and this is perfectly located. The building has fallen into ruin and been broken into. It would be positive to see it being refurbished and used. Lanark is trying to support tourism to keep the town alive which this also supports."
Decision Expected Later This Year
A decision on the planning application is expected later this year by South Lanarkshire Council.
