North Shields office to become four flats in new conversion plan
North Shields office to become four flats in new plan

Plans have been lodged to convert a former North Shields office building into four self-contained flats. Moore Bennett Limited has sought permission from North Tyneside Council to transform a former accountants' office at 15 East Percy Street into a new apartment block.

According to the application, pending approval, the block will become home to one one-bedroom, two three-bedroom, and one two-bedroom flat. The application states: 'The proposed apartments have been designed to provide suitable living accommodation with appropriate natural light, outlook and ventilation. The introduction of roof lights and additional windows improves daylight provision within the upper floor accommodation while maintaining privacy through the use of obscure glazing where necessary.'

The proposal is not considered to result in any unacceptable overlooking, loss of privacy or overbearing impact upon neighbouring properties. Each apartment will be fully self-contained and designed to provide appropriate levels of amenity, outlook, daylight and internal accommodation. The proposal retains the existing scale and proportions of the building, with no increase in ridge height, footprint or overall building mass.

Parking and previous applications

There are only two parking spaces however the firm’s proposals stated the building’s former use as a business saw more people occupy it than would be prospective residents. The proposals are currently live on the council’s planning portal and no decision has yet been made by either councillors or the local authority’s planning department.

Council records show a previous application had been granted to convert the space into three flats back in 2020, however they were not fulfilled.
