California governor Gavin Newsom has put his Sacramento-area mansion up for sale, ahead of his term ending in January. The 12-bath, seven-bed Spanish-style home in Fair Oaks, a suburb of the state capital, hit the market on Monday with an asking price of $7.5m.
Estate features and amenities
The estate sits on an 8.2-acre (3.3-hectare) parcel of land and includes a full-size tennis court, a 5,000-bottle wine cellar, a pool, a cold plunge and a hot tub, according to a Zillow listing from realtors Matthew Hindy and Nick Sadek.
Background and political context
Newsom, elected governor in 2018, is openly considering running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. He and his family moved into the Fair Oaks property in 2019 after briefly living at the historic governor's mansion in Sacramento. A spokesperson at the time described the estate as “more kid-friendly”, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The Newsoms have since split their time between Sacramento and Marin county, an affluent area north of San Francisco, where they also own property. Newsom enrolled his children in Marin county schools in 2024.
Notable events at the property
The Fair Oaks mansion was the site of a protest in 2020, where protesters chained themselves to its fence to denounce rising California prison deaths amid the coronavirus pandemic. The property also received attention when Newsom used it to host a 2024 political fundraiser for Minnesota governor Tim Walz, then campaigning as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.
