A 46-storey tower block with 592 homes is planned for the border of Hulme and Cornbrook in Manchester, while Bury has secured more than £24m for the first phase of Mill Gate shopping centre regeneration. These are among the latest developments tabled with councils across Greater Manchester.
Manchester tower plans
Developers Chatha Capital and landowners Kirindolam 8 Limited have submitted plans to build two blocks with 592 homes on a plot of land off Ellesmere Street, just down the road from Cornbrook Station. One block could reach up to 46 storeys – one storey shorter than the Beetham Tower – and would be flanked by a shorter mid-rise building of up to nine storeys.
Bury shopping centre funding
Bury town centre is set for a multi-million pound transformation after new funding was secured. More than £24m has been allocated to the Mill Gate regeneration project by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. The cash will support a planned first phase of redevelopment at and around the retail space. The funding award has been labelled a 'huge vote of confidence' in Bury and a 'significant step' towards realising council ambitions for the town centre. Bury council and developer Bruntwood have said they want to 'better connect' the shopping centre with Bury Market, Bury interchange and the wider town.
Other borough plans
Bolton council plans to create a 50-plot site for Traveller communities on green belt land. The draft local plan states the council intends to withdraw green belt status for a patch of land off The Alders, between Tonge Moor and Breightmet. The draft local plans will shortly go out for public consultation after being agreed by the council's cabinet on Monday, September 28.
In Salford, Forshaw Land and Property Group has submitted a planning application to construct 154 affordable homes on a field off Fiddlers Lane in Irlam, currently used for horse grazing. The homes include 76 terraced houses and two apartment blocks with a total of 78 flats, all available via the council's Salford Homes Search and managed by housing association ForHousing.
In Stockport, Emery Planning is seeking planning permission on behalf of Wain Homes to build up to 89 homes off Pear Tree Close on the edge of Marble Bridge. The site is currently used for horses, lies within the green belt, and half of the homes are proposed to be affordable. The existing property on the site will be kept alongside a green corridor to the south.

Higher Ince Labour Club on Anderton Street, Ince, vacant since 2021, is the subject of an application to change its use to a place of worship. The application has been registered by Wigan council in the name of Dr Olu Osaloni, based in Platt Bridge. The club had been declared an 'asset of community value', but that designation lapsed in 2022.
