Cardiff University has apologised after students returning to their halls of residence discovered their belongings had been thrown away. Residents at Talybont South halls said they were shocked to find kitchen items, clothes and personal effects dumped, despite being assured possessions would be stored safely during the pandemic.
First-year journalism student Meg Bridges, from Tenby, returned to collect essential items and found her belongings in bin bags on her bed, with posters ripped off walls and soil from a tipped plant over everything. She said she felt disappointed and let down after informing the university she would return.
Medical student Upha Barcley, from Devon, estimated that around £400 worth of kitchen items had been discarded, including new-looking cookware. Students claimed only dirty items were supposed to be thrown away, but clean and sentimental objects were also binned.
A Cardiff University spokesperson apologised and acknowledged 'shortcomings in our actions and our response.' They said no further cleaning of kitchens would take place and that affected students would be compensated for losses. The university urged students not to collect items until lockdown is lifted and provided an email for concerns.
