A single mother from York has transformed her garden for just £500 after being quoted £2,700 by professionals. Lynda Chadwick, 54, undertook the project with the help of a friend, saving £2,200 in the process.
Chadwick, who had not used her garden in five years, was inspired by the Facebook group 'Gardens On A Budget'. She told LatestDeals.co.uk: 'I decided to do my own makeover with help from my friend Sharon to try and make it look better.'
The project involved digging up five tonnes of soil and grass, removing a concrete post, and killing weeds. Chadwick then laid black roll, wheelbarrowed three tonnes of stones, painted the fence, replaced two panels, and added lights and log rolls. She sourced many items cheaply or for free: log rolls from The Range at £5.99 each (seven were free from a friend), fence paint from B&Q at £24 per tin, a barbecue and sun bed from Facebook Marketplace for £30 and £50 respectively, and free plants and a palm tree from her father.
The total cost was £500, including £60 for topsoil removal. Chadwick said the three-week project was hard work but worth it: 'Halfway through, I did say I wish I’d never started it... But Sharon said ‘come on, we can do this!’ So we did. I’m so happy with the result.'
