A man exploring a mountain cabin in North County was stunned to uncover a hidden basement with a secret tunnel, concealed beneath a trapdoor in the living room. The property, built in the 1920s, appeared ordinary until the trapdoor was opened, revealing a narrow concrete staircase leading to an underground chamber.
Inside the basement, the man found two walls covered floor-to-ceiling with mirrors, a built-in fan, an electrical panel, and a heavy metal door. Beyond that door lay a small closet, in the corner of which was a tiny concrete-block tunnel requiring crawling to navigate. The man did not venture further, describing the space as 'sketchy' with a 'weird vibe' and damp, heavy air.
Sharing his discovery on Reddit, he noted that the basement does not appear on any property records or blueprints, and even the realtor was unaware of its existence. He posted photos, apologising for their poor quality due to lack of lighting, and asked for theories about the room's purpose.
Reddit users offered various speculations. One suggested it could have been a prohibition-era bar, while another jokingly warned against buying the house, referencing the horror film 'Barbarian'. A third user observed that the fan and outlet covers did not appear particularly old, and noted the fan vents to the outside, suggesting it might be visible from outside the house.
The man confirmed he did not tamper with anything or explore beyond what was already open, stating it was 'one of the most bizarre things' he had stumbled upon.
