Former Vice President Kamala Harris has purchased an $8.15 million home in the exclusive Point Dume neighbourhood of Malibu, California, prompting speculation about her political ambitions. The 4,000-square-foot property, acquired in December, sits in a celebrity-studded area known for its privacy and luxury.
Harris, who lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, has said she is 'thinking about' a potential run in 2028. However, political consultants, real estate experts and neighbours have offered mixed interpretations of what the purchase might signify, according to a report from Politico.
'People usually come to Point Dume to try and downshift,' said Or Brodsky, a listing agent for a nearby rental property. 'I think she’s planning to have more days with her feet in the sand.' Yet political consultant Marc Adelman countered: 'She’s still in the game, actively. This idea that she bought the house, and therefore that negates the idea that she’s running — I just don’t buy that.'
Local residents noted that many celebrities, including Bob Dylan and Julia Roberts, have moved to the area to escape the limelight. Seth Findley, a Point Dume visitor and Harris supporter, said: 'This is probably where people move out to when they are done with the height of their career. I was thinking of actors or musicians. I guess politics too.'
Despite her 2024 loss, Harris polls near the top of Democratic primary surveys for 2028. However, some consultants warned the purchase could make her appear out of touch. Reed Galen of the Lincoln Project remarked: 'I’m not sure how much less in touch with average Americans you could be from an $8 million compound surrounded by $50 million compounds…in Malibu.'
Others argued that owning a secluded home is practical for a potential candidate. 'Whether she runs for president or not, it actually makes sense to have a secluded house somewhere,' said Littman, adding that it avoids reliance on donors for vacation accommodation. A representative for Harris declined to comment.
