John Cleese has revealed that he took LSD at the age of 65, saying he wanted to know 'what it was all about'. The 85-year-old Fawlty Towers star told The Times' Weekend magazine that he was 'surprisingly ignorant' about drugs when younger and had never been interested in taking them.
In 2005, Cleese tried the powerful psychedelic drug under supervision. He described a 'terrifying' ten-minute period during the experience, but said the expert and his wife helped him through it. 'It was extraordinary to realise how fertile the human mind is,' he added.
The comedy legend also admitted he agreed to the West End production of Fawlty Towers for financial security, hoping to avoid flying economy. 'This is about getting myself a nest egg, so I can get a place in the sun,' he said, citing issues with British weather.
Cleese is working on a new TV show set in the Caribbean, featuring Basil Fawlty's daughter, as well as a musical and non-musical version of Monty Python's Life of Brian, and a comedy film about cannibalism.
