Jasper County, a coastal area in South Carolina, has been named the fastest-growing county in the United States, sparking concerns among long-time residents that their traditional Southern lifestyle is under threat. Since 2020, the county's population has surged by nearly 10,000, a 34% increase, according to Census Bureau data.
Newcomers, many from outside the region, have been openly displaying their origins with items such as New York Yankees banners, Ohio state flags, and a mailbox shaped like a Dallas Cowboys helmet. This influx has led to worries about increased strain on local infrastructure, including traffic and healthcare, as well as potential environmental damage.
Reginald White, 58, a lifelong resident, told the New York Times that 'the serenity is gone' from his hometown. Barbie Henderson, 70, moved to the area with her husband because of its proximity to Hilton Head Island, a popular tourist destination just a half-hour drive away. She noted that while the area was quiet initially, she hoped for more development.
County officials have been working to manage growth, with administrator Andrew Fulghum stating that most development has been concentrated in Hardeeville. Mayor Harry Williams supports the population increase, citing new job opportunities for young people. However, not everyone is pleased; some Facebook users have criticised the pace of development, with one commenting that 'Hilton Head is getting its own trailer park'.
Camika Beaton, a candidate for Jasper County Council, acknowledged the pride in the county's growth but stressed the need for honest discussion about its challenges. 'Growth should not happen at the expense of our residents,' she wrote, emphasising the importance of preparing roads, drainage, and schools before approving large developments.
