Holyrood Palace Neighbours Fume as King Charles's Estate Sells Historic Mews for Luxury Flats
Holyrood Palace neighbours rage over King's estate sale

Residents living in the shadow of the Palace of Holyroodhouse have been blindsided by a controversial property sale that they fear will shatter the peace of their historic community. The King’s private estate, Clarence House, has sold the 19th-century stable block known as the Mews to a private developer, paving the way for a transformation into luxury apartments.

The news was delivered not by the royal estate, but through a ‘for sale’ sign appearing overnight, leaving the tight-knit community of Abbey Strand feeling ignored and undervalued.

A Community Left in the Dark

Locals have expressed profound anger and a sense of betrayal at the lack of consultation. For decades, the Mews buildings have been an integral part of the community, housing artists’ studios and a vital car park for residents who have no other parking options.

The prospect of a lengthy construction project, coupled with the permanent loss of parking and an influx of new residents, has sparked fears over increased disruption, a loss of privacy, and the erosion of the area’s unique character.

Clarence House Responds

A spokesperson for Clarence House confirmed the sale, stating the decision was made as the buildings were ‘no longer needed for operational purposes’. They emphasised that the transaction was a ‘commercial matter’ for the private estate and not funded by the taxpayer.

The developer’s plans are still under wraps, but it is understood that the conversion into high-end residential properties is the most likely outcome for the prime real estate, situated just off Edinburgh's famed Royal Mile.

Fighting for Their Home

Determined to protect their way of life, residents are now mobilising. They are preparing to lodge formal objections with the City of Edinburgh Council, hoping that planning authorities will consider the devastating impact the development could have on one of the city’s most iconic and historic locales.

The battle for the Mews has become more than a simple property dispute; it is a fight to preserve a community nestled against a royal backdrop, now fearing it will be overshadowed by modern luxury.
