Plans to demolish a row of domestic garages near Canberra Road in Bridgend to make way for a new block of six one-bedroom flats have been approved by Bridgend County Borough Council. The Valleys to Coast Housing association submitted the proposal, which was granted approval at a council planning committee in July 2026.
Proposed Development Details
The plans state: "The proposal consists of a single apartment block containing six 1-bedroom flats." Car parking for seven vehicles is proposed on land at the end of Canberra Road, along with a communal refuse storage area and cycle store to the north of the building. The site will include generous areas of shared open space around the apartment block.
Resident Support and Concerns
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Steven Bletsoe said residents living near the site had supported the application in principle, noting that the garages had been left derelict for a long time and had seen numerous incidents of anti-social behaviour. However, concerns were raised about potential impacts on parking and loss of privacy for properties on Castle View, as well as fears of flooding due to inadequate drainage in Castle View that could direct surface water onto the site.
Drainage and Infrastructure
A representative for the applicant said the flooding issues were understood to be caused by faults with Welsh Water infrastructure, and that they could not work on third-party infrastructure without agreements from Welsh Water. They expressed willingness to raise the issue with relevant parties and submit a sustainable drainage strategy. Council officers noted plans for an attenuation system under the car park, with a further drainage amendment approved. They deemed the application an appropriate form of development and recommended approval.
The council granted approval unanimously, subject to the developer paying a Section 106 agreement of just under £9,000 to support local community infrastructure.
