Plans have been submitted to demolish a former bar in a Swansea community, described as being in a "dangerous condition", and replace it with 16 flats. Martin Joyce has asked Swansea Council for planning permission to knock down the former City Bar in Miers Street, St Thomas, and build the new homes in its place.
The plans state the existing premises has been closed for several years and "is in a poor state of disrepair". They add that the redevelopment of the site will result in "the removal of both an eyesore and a bad neighbour use."
Redevelopment plans for the site
Planning documents submitted with the application by agents Abbey Planning state: "The City Bar which had an established use as a nightclub premises can be considered a 'bad neighbour' use given the predominantly residential character of the surrounding area."
"The club has been the subject of several noise abatement orders in past years and therefore noise and disturbance has been a prevalent issue to the detriment of the residential amenities of the surrounding area. Its redevelopment would therefore result in a net benefit to surrounding residents."
The documents also note: "The premises has been closed for several years and parts of the building have deteriorated to a dangerous condition. The building is beyond economic repair. This is supported by a detailed structural and condition report prepared by consultants which accompanies this planning application. In summary demolition of the premises is recommended."
History of the City Bar
City Bar once became known for having an outdoor dining dome which was built to its rear, prompting the venue to become something of a talking point in the area. In 2021, its owners were served with an enforcement notice by Swansea Council, requiring them to take down the unauthorised structure.
Swansea Council's planning committee will now consider the new application.
