A derelict building in Broughton that has been a fly-tipping hotspot for more than a decade may finally get a new lease of life.
The 'Coach House' on George Street North could be extended to create six new apartments and two commercial units, if plans submitted to the council are approved.
Long-standing problem
The old outbuilding, wedged behind Higher Crumpsall synagogue, has been vacant for at least 12 years. Along with the overgrown land next to it, it has been attracting near constant littering at George St car park.
Littering is so frequent in the surrounding area that it has been captured on Google Maps over the last ten years, and the area is regularly targeted by council clean-ups.
Transformation plans
Under the new plans, the building would be extended and turned into homes and shops. The proposal, submitted by London developer Mr Aktar Ismail Bashir, could see the old building transformed if the city hall approves the plans.
A document prepared by planning consultants LCA requests permission for a 'proposed extension and part change of use' for the site, which was last used as offices. The homes would be on the upper two floors, with three apartments on each level, while the ground floor would be split into two halves for commercial use as offices or shops.
A statement suggests the scheme is 'well-considered and will bring this derelict site back into positive use', promising 'modern energy-efficient homes and new jobs for the local community'.
Transport links
The proposal doesn't include car parking spaces, with a planning document claiming 'residential occupants will have easy and convenient access to public transport and local amenities due to the site's location', while customers and visitors to the commercial parts of the building could make use of the public car park next door. There's also a bus stop outside the synagogue and Crumpsall tram stop is a ten minute walk away.
So far there have been no objections to the proposal. Salford Council is expected to make a decision on the application by the end of September.
