A neighbour dispute has escalated after a woman discovered a fat-shaming note stuck to her apartment wall with used chewing gum. The handwritten message, reportedly left outside a block of flats, went viral on Reddit after being shared on the subreddit r/Apartmentliving on March 17.
The anonymous writer accused the woman of bumping into their car, writing: 'To the fat b***h who pushed herself into my car. Next time be more careful.' The note continued with claims that the woman 'shook' the car and 'almost gave me a concussion', adding: 'I'm sorry being so fat makes it difficult for you to fit through narrow spaces.' It ended with a smiley face and the suggestion: 'Try starving yourself b***h.'
The post attracted over 1,500 comments, with many Redditors condemning the note as 'disgusting' and 'unhinged'. One commenter wrote: 'It's ridiculous how some people act like it's okay to leave this kind of note just because someone touched someone else's car.' Another added: 'A lot of projection in that note.' The use of chewed gum to attach the note was widely criticised as 'cowardly' and 'trashy'.
The incident highlights tensions in high-density living, where shared spaces and parking can lead to conflicts. Solicitor Sophie Campbell-Adams recommends a three-step approach: first, speak to the neighbour to resolve miscommunications; second, mediate formally or informally; and third, litigate if necessary, though this can be costly.
