Laundry Expert's Simple Household Hacks Banish Summer Stains

A laundry expert has revealed how common household items can effectively remove stubborn summer stains, from red wine to grass marks, without the need for expensive chemicals. Fran Forgione, a laundry specialist at AO.com based in Manchester, says many people unnecessarily reach for costly products when simple cupboard staples can do the job.

For grass stains, she recommends a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Apply it to the stain, leave for at least 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse with cool water. She warns against using hot water, which can set grass stains.

Red wine spills can be tackled with hairspray. Spray liberally, leave for a few minutes, dab, and repeat before washing on the highest setting. Alternatively, douse with soda or sparkling water immediately to lift the stain.

BBQ grease stains on cotton should be saturated with washing detergent or a paste of washing powder and water. Work it in, leave to soak, then wash. Air-dry the clothing to avoid baking the stain in.

For tea and coffee stains, apply dish soap or liquid detergent promptly and keep the stain wet for at least an hour. For tougher marks, use a mix of white wine and vinegar or a paste of baking powder and water, working it in until the stain disappears.
