Ewan McGregor sells LA home for £5M after Scotland move

Scottish Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor has officially closed a significant chapter in his life, finalising the sale of his expansive Los Angeles property for a substantial £5 million. This move comes after the star made the decisive choice to leave California and establish a permanent base in his Scottish homeland.

A Star's Homecoming to Scotland

The 54-year-old actor, famed for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise, has publicly expressed a powerful pull back to his roots. Last week, while accepting an award at the Bafta Scotland ceremony in Glasgow, McGregor confirmed his permanent residency, stating, “Mary and I are now here in Scotland.” He charmingly added a plea to local filmmakers, suggesting they create “lots of Scottish films” so he and his wife, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, 40, could work together without being apart.

This homecoming was solidified in 2023 when McGregor invested £2.35 million in a magnificent ten-bedroom mansion near his home town of Crieff in Perthshire. The C-listed property has since undergone extensive renovations, becoming the family's new central hub.

The Topanga Canyon Property Details

The recently sold American residence, nestled in the sought-after Topanga Canyon area of Los Angeles, is a remarkable compound. The property sprawls across 29 acres of land and features a modern three-bedroom home with four bathrooms. The estate's luxury amenities are a key selling point, including a detached gym, a swimming pool, and two separate guest cottages.

A significant feature for the motoring enthusiast was a large garage that housed McGregor's prized motorcycle and car collection. The property even enjoyed a moment in the spotlight, featuring in the actor's television series, Long Way Home. A sales brochure for the home highlighted its unique appeal, describing it as a “one-of-a-kind compound [that] offers unmatched access to nature, style, and seclusion.”

Profitable Property Move

The journey to the final sale saw McGregor and his wife initially list the US home on the market earlier this year for £6.5 million. After adjusting the price, the property was ultimately sold for £5 million. Despite the reduction from the initial asking price, the sale represents a very healthy profit for the couple, who originally purchased the luxury estate for £2 million in 2018. This successful transaction underscores a lucrative and strategic move in the celebrity real estate market, funding the actor's new life and investments in Scotland.
