Ed Sheeran’s plans to expand his Suffolk estate have met with repeated opposition from the local council and neighbours. The singer, known for his low-key public image, has encountered difficulties with several planning applications at his property, informally known as Sheeranville.
Most recently, he was required to remove a five-metre sign from a former barn that he had converted into a private pub dedicated to his wife. The barn is Grade II-listed, and the council deemed the sign inappropriate.
Last year, his proposal to build a private chapel for his wedding was refused on the grounds that the village already had a suitable church. Additionally, his plans for a “wildlife pond” with a jetty, handrails and steps have been questioned by neighbours who suspect it may actually be a swimming pool.
The estate has also been the subject of a police visit after claims that construction activities disturbed a protected settlement of rare newts.
Despite the setbacks, the singer has previously received praise from locals for his contributions to the community. His existing property reportedly includes a mansion, indoor pool, hot tub, treehouse, orangery, football pitch, private beach and a proposed underground cinema.
