Ed Sheeran has moved to quash speculation that he is permanently relocating to the United States, insisting his family's move is only temporary while he tours. The 34-year-old singer took to Instagram to set the record straight after comments on a podcast sparked rumours of a permanent settlement in America.
In his post, Sheeran wrote: “I’m not moving, I’m going on tour with my family and relocating to the continent I’m touring on, don’t wanna commute from London to San Diego obvz. Also this isn’t a tax thing, it’s USA not UAE. Il always pay tax in UK coz that’s where I live.”
The singer, who owns an estimated £70 million property portfolio, recently purchased a £9 million apartment in New York. However, he spends most of his time at Sheeranville, his Suffolk estate, with his wife Cherry Seaborn and their daughters Lyra and Jupiter.
Earlier this year, on the 2 Johnnies podcast, Sheeran had said: “I’m just about to move to America. I feel like I might be the only person moving to America. I’m going on tour there for a while and I have a family so I can’t dip in and out. We’re going and settling there.” He also previously expressed ambitions to transition into country music, calling Nashville his “end goal”.
Sheeran, who grew up in Suffolk, has described his cultural identity as Irish due to his father’s Belfast roots. On The Louis Theroux Podcast, he said: “I class my culture as Irish. I think that’s what I grew up with. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain.”
