The Duke and Duchess of Westminster have announced the birth of their first child, a daughter named Cosima Florence Grosvenor. The baby was born in London on Sunday, 27 July, with both mother and child reported to be doing well.
In a statement, the couple said: "The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are thrilled to announce the birth of their baby daughter. They have named her Cosima Florence Grosvenor, who was born in London today. Both the Duchess and Cosima are doing well. The Duke and Duchess now look forward to spending this special time together as a family."
The name Cosima is of Greek and Italian origin, derived from the Greek word kosmos, meaning order, harmony, or the universe. A source close to the couple declined to comment on matters of titles and primogeniture, saying it was a matter for Government and Parliament, and that the couple were focused on spending time with their daughter.
The arrival marks a new chapter for Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, and his wife Olivia, who married at Chester Cathedral in June 2024. Their pregnancy was announced in March, with a spokesperson saying the Duchess was expecting a baby in the summer. In April, the couple visited the University of Chester's Queen's Park campus, where the Duke praised the institution's work.
The Duke, who is godfather to Prince George and Prince Archie and a godson of King Charles, met Olivia in 2021 through mutual friends. They became engaged in April 2023. The wedding was attended by Prince William and Princess Eugenie, with the bride wearing an ivory silk gown by Emma Victoria Payne and the Grosvenor family's Faberge Myrtle Leaf Tiara.
