A couple from Warwickshire have saved £80,000 on their barn conversion by undertaking most of the work themselves, after being quoted £120,000 by a contractor. Georgia Goulden-Page, 30, and Josh Gill, 33, purchased the property for £715,000 in August last year and began renovations in March 2025.
The property required a complete overhaul, including a new kitchen, internal reconfiguration and extensive repairs. Rather than paying the hefty quote, the couple decided to take on the project themselves, spending just £40,000 so far. They have fitted a new kitchen, knocked down walls and moved doorways to create their dream home.
Georgia, a jewellery buyer, said: 'It's been a lot of hard work, but it's totally worth it in the end. I think the work first feels impossible, but most people are totally capable. You just need someone telling you that.' The couple had previously renovated their first home, selling it for £165,000 more than they paid, which gave them valuable DIY skills.
They hired specialists such as a builder, electrician, plumber, plasterer and structural engineer for specific jobs, but did all prep work and waste removal themselves. By handling smaller tasks like panelling, priming and constructing pantry walls, they saved £650. They also built bespoke alcove units for £400 after a £4,300 quote, and completed an arched doorway for £500 instead of £1,000.
The couple installed ready-made kitchen units from DIY Kitchens for £11,500, saving on labour costs. Georgia said: 'It still feels expensive because we're investing in really good quality materials, but we know we're saving so much in labour costs.' They aim to increase the home's value to £885,000.
