A couple refurbishing their new home in Brighton, East Sussex, were shocked to discover a secret room containing an iron bed behind the walls of a basement-level bathroom.
Property developers Steven Sparks, 54, and Carolyn Sparks, 42, stumbled across the dark, cobweb-strewn space while conducting a contractor survey. They had not known the property had a basement when they purchased it, as it was not listed in the estate agent's details.
Carolyn Sparks filmed the discovery for social media, describing the find as 'freaky'. The couple later learned from the current tenant that the bed had been used as a prop for a horror film her daughter was making for a college assignment. The tenant had not retrieved the bed due to health concerns and a fear of spiders.
The room was originally part of the Victorian property and had been used for coal storage, with an access hole outside for tipping coal into the basement.
