North Lanarkshire Council has published details of its plans for a significant housing development in Coatbridge. The local authority has internally submitted a planning application for eight houses and 46 flats near Dunbeth Family Centre, on the site of the former Jackson Court tower block, which was recently demolished.
Parking and consultation
Parking at the site would increase to 44 spaces. Before seeking planning permission, the council held a public consultation exercise with two public sessions. Attendance was low, with only five people at each session. The council attributes this to the relatively low number of nearby properties and a general acceptance that replacing the tower block will improve the area.
Feedback and concerns
Feedback received in person or online has been largely positive. Some concerns were raised about the availability of play space for children, but the proposed development includes areas designated for informal free play. In response to traffic concerns at the junction of Hillcrest Avenue and Main Street, the council noted that this development represents a reduction in total homes compared to the old tower block, and no access from Main Street is planned.
