The historic Chester Grosvenor Hotel is closing its doors today, September 30, as plans for a major redevelopment of the city landmark move forward. The hotel, located in a Grade II listed building beside Chester's Eastgate Clock, is shutting following Bespoke Hotels' decision to cease operating the property earlier this year.
New operator appointed for redevelopment
The hotel's owners, the Grosvenor Estate, have selected Martin Property Group as a partner for a major refurbishment of the venue, with the long-term ambition of securing the hotel's future as a five-star destination of national and international appeal. Martin Property Group will lead the redevelopment and, once the work is complete, operate the hotel.
The company's recent work in Chester includes the revitalisation of Eastgate Shopping Centre and bringing Harrods to the city. The final redevelopment plans are still being developed and will be subject to planning approval. Once work begins, the refurbishment is expected to take around two years.
Owners and partners commit to hotel's future
Nicholas Dobbs, head of Grosvenor's Family Office and Grosvenor Rural Estates, which will retain the freehold of the hotel site, said: “We are delighted to have chosen Martin Property Group to shape the next chapter of the hotel’s history and, upon completion, to operate the business.

Martin Property Group expands Chester investment
Martin Property Group acquired the freehold of the former Grosvenor Shopping Centre, now Eastgate Shopping Centre, from Grosvenor in 2022. Paul G.
